- I wasn't able to see much information about this book at the time that I requested it, so I chose based on the title. I'm a big fan of Cook's Illustrated, and I hoped this title would round out my other recipe books for two with actual meal menus, or even one-pot meals. It offers neither of those, so it was almost a complete disappointment for me. This appears to be a gift-type book for beginner cooks, so maybe it's a good housewarming gift (although one of others I list below might be better even for that).But here's the good/bad, IMO
Pros
1. Full-color photos for each recipe. I really prefer photos for inspiration when I'm sorting out a week's meals, so I was glad to see them here. This is the single advantage this cookbook has over some other titles in this category.
2. All recipes make two (often generous) servings. No math required to cut down larger recipes.
3. Nothing too complicated. Recipes are pretty easy to follow, without really advanced skills needed.
4. Nice intro sections for beginners. There are decnet tips for hardware in the kitchen (pans, pots, etc.) and how to shop "smarter" for two.
5. Two-page intro spread divides recipes by category, like "keeping it light" and "no need for takeout." BUT I don't really find these categories all that intuitive or useful. "Game day grub" is only likely to be useful from time to time - why not "fall/winter meals" or "holidays" or "slow cooker specials"? By the way, most of the categories they list have precisely 3 recipes, so don't expect a ton of "easy weeknight dinners" or "one-pot meals." You'll get 3 of each.
6. Each recipe only takes one page. No flipping back and forth to complete the recipe.
Cons
1. Nothing new from The Complete Cooking for Two Cookbook 650 Recipes for Everything You'll Ever Want to Make. If you already own that book, you already own all these recipes. Given that the Complete version has hundreds more recipes, it's arguably a far better deal, even though it doesn't have as many pretty pictures, and you may have to turn pages in the middle of a recipe.
2. Really basic. This is only a con if you're not a beginner, of course. But I think the title should make it clear that this is book intended for new cooks.
3. No menus!! Since it's called "dinners for two," one might assume (as I did) that there'd be lots of suggestions to serve entree A with sides B and C, or that there'd be lots of one-pan meals, or that there'd at least be a section listing menus. Nope. None of those things. It's just a bunch of main courses, and you're on your own for sides, wine/beer pairings, dessert ideas, anything that really makes these complete "dinners." Given that this book is beginner-oriented, this seems like a serious oversight.
4. Info could be much better organized. It's a slog to read through the excessive text for the good bits. For example, the intro includes some paragraphs on quantities you should buy of various sides if you're shopping for two, like brussels sprouts, potatoes, greens, etc. But instead of a handy chart or even bullet points that make it easy to scan and/or look up, it's a series of wordy paragraphs. They could have included a ton more info if they'd thought this through better.
5. Recipes aren't very organized. They're grouped by protein, but there aren't dividers within the book to delineate the sections. Nor does the organization within sections make sense - for example, why not put all the Italian-style chicken recipes together?
6. Uninspired recipes. Most of the recipes they chose for this book are pretty easy to find with the most basic internet search burgers, chicken piccata, lasagna, manicotti, eggplant parmesan, and so on. I've tried to make meal plans from this cookbook, and just can't get excited about anything (or I don't need a cookbook to make it, like spaghetti).
7. No nutritional info. There's plenty of room left on most of the recipes for even basic calorie, fat, protein info. Lack of this info is a strike against this cookbook for sure, especially considering its other shortcomings.
Overall, I'll likely offer this cookbook to a young, aspiring home cook to try their hand at some basic American recipes from a book with pretty pictures and reasonable instructions. But I recommend one of several other cookbooks if you want any of the above "cons" addressed The Complete Cooking for Two Cookbook 650 Recipes for Everything You'll Ever Want to Make, or Healthy Cooking for Two (or Just You) Low-Fat Recipes with Half the Fuss and Double the Taste; or One Pan, Two Plates More Than 70 Complete Weeknight Meals for Two, or One Pan & Done Hassle-Free Meals from the Oven to Your Table, or even the delightful The Pleasures of Cooking for One. While you're at it, you might as well get a copy of Small-Batch Baking When Just Enough for 1 or 2. . . Is Just Enough!, because dessert. - I suscribe to cooks illustrated magazine, this book was not of that caliber. It was so basic and generic I have my doubts it was even fro the same publisher. Save your money and just google recipes for 2. I assure you the results will be far more exciting and dynamic.
- I'm single and I don't like making meals that last for days on end. I love being able to make a recipe and just have one or two nights of leftovers! The recipes are really easy to follow, nice pictures, lots of variety. Will be using many of the dishes in the future.

Lots of ideas and suggestions
Cooking for one is not fun, so the book was a great help and I got 2 meals that were healthy - Nice cookbook from America's Test Kitchen! Fun to look through, and especially nice for busy working, young, or older couples looking for recipes only for two! I gave this along with a smaller bright red casserole dish for a friend's Christmas gift!
- I purchased this for my mother in law, since it's just herself that she's cooking for, and she loves it she said it has the perfect recipes for just one or two people and that they taste wonderful!
- It had many of the same recipes as the Americas Test Kitchen cookbook for Two.
- Easy recipes for great tasting meals.
