A readable analysis of 25 momentous presidential speeches that provides context and understanding of events and history, illustrated with facsimiles of supporting documents, notes, and drafts that together formed the final speech.

The book examines the pivotal, often familiar, and potent speeches and addresses of dozens of U.S. presidents to reveal the varied and often conflicting points of view that shaped the final famous words. We see in many examples, the actual edited final speech, showing how remarkable and forceful language was crafted, sometimes last minute, into the enduring words made famous by their timing.

"A great look back and the history of speeches by former Presidents. I particular enjoyed some of the background on the very early works by the Founding Presidents.

Some of the recent offerings may have some information on each speech that is already known to historians. Most offer at least one interesting piece of information, not previously known.

Well researched with some great artwork and photos. A must for any Presidential or History buff."

  • Each section addresses a single speech. The first part goes over the historical context relevant to the speech. Some notes are also made as to the process of producing the speech itself. Overall the background sections are interesting but not particularly detailed, which may not be surprising considering the large number of speeches covered. The rest of the section is then devoted to the full text of the speech, along with images of the originals. The speeches covered are as follows

President George Washington - Farewell Address to the American People (1796)
President Thomas Jefferson - First Inaugural Address (1801)
President James Monroe - Seventh Annual Message to Congress (1823)
President Abraham Lincoln - First Inaugural Address (1861)
President Abraham Lincoln - Second Inaugural Address (1865)
President Theodore Roosevelt - Address at the Laying of the Corner Stone of the Office Building of the House of Representatives (1906)
President Woodrow Wilson - Presidential Address to Joint Session of Congress (1918)
President Franklin Delano Roosevelt - First Inaugural Address (1933)
President Franklin Delano Roosevelt - State of the Union Address (1941)
President Franklin Delano Roosevelt - Presidential Address to Joint Session of Congress (1941)
President Harry S. Truman - Presidential Address to Joint Session of Congress (1947)
President Dwight David Eisenhower - Farewell Address to the American People (1961)
President John Fitzgerald Kennedy - Inaugural Address (1961)
President John Fitzgerald Kennedy - Address at Rice University (1962)
President Lyndon Baines Johnson - Presidential Address to Joint Session of Congress (1965)
President Richard Milhous Nixon - Address to the Nation on the War in Vietnam (1969)
President Ronald Wilson Reagan - Address on the 40th Anniversary of D-Day (1984)

  • As a retired history professor, I could have used this useful compendium. The preface for each speech shows that C. Edward Vilade did his research. Reading the speeches shows significant evidence that political problems of today are not entirely new and could provide some insight in solving our problems today. That is a benefit of history that is so often overlooked.
